Compare and Order Numbers

When you compare two numbers, you use symbols to show whether one is greater than, less than, or equal to the other.

greater than: >           less than: <          equal to: =

Compare the numbers. Write <, >, or = for the ___.

5,228 ___ 5, 628

Arrange the numbers, one above the other, so that their place values align.

Compare the lined-up digits, beginning with the thousands place.

Use the symbols <, >, and = to compare.

Since 2 < 6, then 5,228 < 5,628.

So, 5,228 < 5,628.
